Vacendak Celebrates Dental Hygiene Month

, , ,

October is Dental Hygiene Month, a time to remind our community why having a good, consistent oral care routine is so important. A good oral care routine includes brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, flossing once a day, and using mouthwash once or twice a day or as directed by your dentist. Taking good care of your teeth also includes eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding tobacco. And, of course, you should visit your dentist for a dental cleaning and check every six months.

If you need a reminder of why you should practice good oral hygiene, consider these benefits:

  • Prevention of tooth decay and loss. Infrequent or less than stellar brushing can leave a film of bacteria, known as plaque, on your teeth. Over time, plaque can lead to tooth decay. You may experience tooth sensitivity, toothache, pain when biting, and discoloration, among other issues. While these symptoms aren’t fun, the good news is that they can be reversed if a dentist catches signs of tooth decay early.
  • Early detection of oral diseases. Regular dental check-ups can also identify other issues, like gum disease, infections, or oral cancer. Dental hygienists are often the first line of defense in flagging concerns that may indicate a more significant problem. The earlier oral diseases are caught, the better the outcomes.
  • A brighter smile. Want whiter teeth? Reevaluate your dental hygiene habits! Teas, sodas, red wine, fruits and berries, and dark sauces can all stain your teeth if they are not brushed off your teeth in a timely manner. Good brushing and specialized toothpaste can help keep your teeth white. Your biannual dental visits also give you a deep clean as well.
  • Improved overall health. Dental exams can detect more than just issues with your teeth and mouth; they can also uncover other problems that may be going on in the body. Diabetes, osteoporosis, anemia, acid reflux, and HIV manifest themselves in ways that can be seen through a dental exam, and a dentist can alert you if further evaluation may be warranted.

Dental Hygiene Month is also an opportunity to thank our Vacendak dental hygienists, who work every day to keep our patients’ teeth clean and mouths healthy.
