Tips for a Tooth-Healthy School Year
A new school year requires new school supplies, an updated wardrobe, and a haircut. It’s also a great time to refresh your kids’ dental care habits! As your children return to school this fall, follow these steps to improve their dental health.
Buy a new toothbrush.
A new toothbrush can go a long way in jumpstarting your children’s dental hygiene. Let your child pick out the color or character on the toothbrush so they enjoy using it. Explore different shaped toothbrush heads or density of bristles to see what your child likes best. This is also a great time to try a new type of toothbrush, like one that is electric or battery-operated. While you’re at it, let your child choose a new toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash as well.
Reestablish brushing routine.
Regular cleaning is essential to a child’s oral and overall health. It prevents cavities, allows permanent teeth to develop properly, and instills good dental habits. Make it a point to sit with your child (even if they are older) to ensure they are brushing correctly over the first few days or weeks of the school year.
Stock up on healthy snacks.
What we eat plays a big role in dental health. Opt for fruits, vegetables, and nuts as go-to snacks for kids, precutting and storing them as necessary to make them easily accessible. Try to avoid sugary treats and highly processed foods, which are more likely to cause cavities.
Ensure your kids are drinking plenty of water.
Water helps teeth in so many ways! It removes residue left on the teeth after eating, which prevents bacteria build-up that can lead to cavities. The fluoride in water strengthens teeth to prevent tooth decay. Water also hydrates the mouth, aiding in saliva production and reducing the risk of gum disease.
Use a mouthguard for sports.
It’s essential that children who play sports that have a high risk of impact, contact, or collision wear a mouthguard. Mouthguards prevent teeth from being fractured or knocked out, as well as jaw, cheek, and gum issues. A good mouthguard should fit snugly on the teeth and be comfortable to wear.
Review orthodontia care.
Back to school is a good time for older children to review the basics of caring for braces, invisible aligners, headgear, and other orthodontic devices. Talk with your child about what foods are acceptable to eat, cleaning procedures, and wearing instructions.
In addition to these at-home tooth care tips, be sure your child has regular dental appointments for a thorough cleaning and examination. To schedule an appointment with Vacendak Dentistry, call us at (757) 609-3510 or contact us online.
