New Year’s Resolutions for Your Teeth

, ,

Many New Year’s resolutions focus on health, like losing weight, eating better, and prioritizing mental health. If you plan on taking steps to become a better you in 2025, be sure to add improving your oral health to your goals. Making small changes to your dental care routine can go a long way in keeping your teeth and mouth healthy. Here’s where to start:

  • Brush twice a day for two minutes each. Yes, you know you should brush twice daily for two minutes, but do you always follow that guidance? If you find yourself skipping brushing at night or cutting your brushing time down occasionally, commit to doing it right every time. Use January as a time to reestablish good habits.
  • Floss daily. Flossing is essential for removing plaque from the hard-to-reach areas between the teeth. You can use string floss, floss picks, or a water pick. The key is to choose the flossing tool that is easiest for you so that you’ll be sure to incorporate it into your dental care routine.
  • Change your toothbrush regularly. It would be best to swap your toothbrush every three to four months. Over time, the toothbrush bristles wear down, and you may need to clean your teeth more thoroughly. In addition, bacteria can build up on the toothbrush and will be reintroduced to your mouth every time you brush. Make a note on your calendar now so you remember.
  • Drink more water. This resolution can double as eating healthier! Drinking more water helps to flush bacteria from your mouth, especially after you eat. Make sure the water you’re drinking has fluoride, which keeps your teeth strong and helps prevent cavities.
  • Quit smoking. This resolution may be hard, but it’s worth it for your entire body, including your teeth. Smoking turns your teeth yellow, contributes to bad breath, makes you more likely to develop gum disease, and can lead to oral cancer.
  • Schedule regular dental appointments. If you haven’t scheduled your next appointment, call your dentist and do it now! Regular dental care is essential to detect and treat dental issues and give your teeth a deep cleaning.
