The Dentist’s Guide to Easter Candy
Spring is finally here, and Easter is just around the corner! In a few short days, millions of children will simultaneously chomp into chocolate bunny ears, candy eggs and sugar-coated marshmallows. It’s a time of excitement, happiness and celebration.
Unless you’re a tooth.
In fact…believe it or not…most children won’t be thinking about the health of their teeth that day. Crazy, we know.
While you prepare your children’s Easter basket this week (and select the candy you’ll inevitably snack on too), here are a few things you can watch out for:
- Stay away from the hard, sticky candies. These are dangerous for teeth and can easily destroy existing dental work such as braces, crowns and fillings.
- Lean toward soft candies like chocolate. These melt faster, which allows natural saliva to work faster at cleaning teeth on its own.
- Try sugar-free options.
- Encourage your children to brush between candy binges. Holiday gatherings often extend throughout the day and involve visits with different groups of people. Pack tooth brushes so your children can give their teeth a break between each candy-filled event.
All of us here at Vacendak are excited to welcome in spring, and we want your smiles to shine while you welcome it too.
Have fun, and enjoy.
