All About Oral Cancer

,

Oral cancer occurs when a malignant tumor forms in the mouth and throat. It’s the most common head and neck cancer, and nearly 60,000 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2025, according to the American Cancer Society. Dentists are on the front line when it comes to detecting oral cancer, and we take it very seriously at Vacendak Dentistry. In observance of Oral Cancer Awareness Month this April, we’re doing our part in educating the public about this disease.

Risks
Oral cancers are more likely to be found in people over the age of 40, and men are twice as likely to develop this type of cancer than women. Tobacco and alcohol use are the leading risk factors, followed by sun exposure, HPV infection, and poor nutrition. Genetics can also play a role in the likelihood of developing oral cancer.

Symptoms
Oral cancer can present itself in many ways. Some people notice a sore or lump in their mouth (including the gums, tongue, inner lining of the cheeks, roof, and floor of the mouth), lips, throat, or red or white patches. Oral cancer can also make it difficult to speak, chew, or swallow. It can cause loose teeth and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Ear pain can also be a symptom of oral cancer. If you notice any symptoms of oral cancer, it’s essential to seek medical attention from a dentist or a doctor.

Prevention
Lifestyle changes, such as quitting drinking or smoking and staying out of the sun, can go a long way in reducing the risk of developing oral cancer. Taking care of your oral health is also essential. This includes brushing the teeth and gums, drinking fluorinated water, and seeing a dentist every six months for a check-up. At Vacendak, oral cancer screening is an essential part of every appointment. Using a handheld device called the VELscope, our doctors check for early signs of cancer that are invisible to the naked eye.

Regular dental care can help detect oral cancer. If it’s time to schedule your next appointment or if you have general oral health questions, call Vacendak Dentistry at (757) 609-3510 or contact us online. Our dental staff will be happy to set up a check-up and answer any of your questions.
