All About Dental Crowns

,

Crowns aren’t just for heads, they’re for teeth too! As one of the most common tooth restoration techniques, dental crowns have helped millions of Americans with their tooth troubles. If you’ve been told you need a crown but are still unsure exactly what it is, read on to learn all you need to know about dental crowns.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are customized caps that fit over a damaged or weakened tooth. By covering the affected tooth, dental crowns help to prevent further damage and restore the tooth to its original size and shape.

Why are dental crowns used?

There are several reasons that a dental crown may be necessary. Crowns can hold together a weak or cracked tooth, restore a tooth that is worn down, hold a dental bridge in place, and support a large filling. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes to change the size, shape or color of a tooth.

How are they applied?

While many dentists require two separate visits to first prep the tooth and then fit the crown, Vacendak Dentistry offers same-day crown service. The Vacendak dental team creates a digital scan of the tooth that is sent directly to our in-office ceramic processing center which creates a fully customized fitted crown. The tooth is numbed, and the crown is then permanently cemented in place over the tooth.

Is any special care needed for dental crowns?

One of the best things about dental crowns is that they don’t require any special care after they are placed on the tooth. However, even though the crown covers the existing tooth, that doesn’t mean the tooth is protected from decay. Brushing and flossing should still be a twice daily routine to prevent cavities and gum disease.

Will a dental crown last forever?

On average, crowns last between five and 15 years, depending on your dental hygiene and other mouth-related habits, like grinding your teeth or chewing ice. Signs you need to replace a dental crown include tooth or gum pain, chipping or cracking of the crown, looseness around the crown, and noticeable changes in appearance. It’s important to continue regular dental visits so your dentist can monitor the crown.
